Participate in the Present

The National 12 Meter Club encourages members to get more involved in 12 Meter sailing. This means sailing on the boats this year, next year and the year after. You may have to travel to another location to sail on a 12 Meter. But it is almost always worth it. Sailing on a 12 Meter is awesome and inspiring. We encourage you to seek out boats which offer sailing opportunities and take advantage of them. Then share what you have learned with other club members.

After the America’s Cup, the 12 Meter class kept sailing but the competitions changed back from match racing to fleet racing. In the United States, most 12 Meters were based out of Newport RI and this became home of the class as well as host for the North American and World Championships. 12 Meter regattas have also occurred in other locations such as Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, New York Harbor and Greenwich CT, to name a few.

Today, 12 Meters generally fall into 3 categories:

1) Boats You Can Sail On - these may be charter boats which do day sailing trips, or boats which race in regattas with charter crews.

2) Private Boats - which mostly race in regattas.

3) Project Boats - these are boats which are currently available for sale (normally to qualified buyers) and also boats which are in need of restoration. More information on this category is provided in “Plan for the Future.”
